LIVE TRAIN TIMES

Scarborough is known as the jewel of the Yorkshire Coast and is known for its castle on the headland looking over its two beautiful bays, both very different in character.

It has an interesting history going back to Viking times and is one of the oldest towns in England. It started as a fishing village and became popular as a seaside resort in the 1600s with the discovery of the mineral waters at what is now the Spa.

The town grew in popularity during Victorian times with the arrival of the railway and is now the 3rd most visited place in the UK.

As you approach the resort by train look out for the large mere on your right. This natural lake of 40 acres is the home to much wildlife. Peasholm Park in the North of the town is popular with families. Swan pedalo boats can be taken out on the lake and the naval warfare battles, using manned 20ft replica boats, take place throughout the Summer season.

The town has something for everyone, from the busy amusement arcades on the South bay to the quieter beaches at the North end. A good selection of big name and independent shops make up the high street and the market hall is well worth a visit. Marine Drive connects the two bays and porpoises and dolphins can regularly be spotted from it as it curves around the headland. North Bay Railway is a ridable miniature railway which connects Peasholm Park with the magnificent Sealife Centre.
