ABOUT YCCRP
Railway 200 is the nationwide celebration marking 200 years since the opening of the Stockton and Darlington railway on 27 September 1825.

Community Rail Partnerships like ourselves are joining in with the celebrations by putting on projects and activities, honouring the railway's past, its role today and its importance as a sustainable mode of transport for the future.

Events will be taking place all over the country focussed on four strategic themes :
Inovation, technology and environment
Education and skills
Celebrating rail people
Culture, heritage and tourism

ABOUT YCCRP

Celebrating the longest station seat in the world

Scarborough station is home to what is claimed to be the longest station seat in the world.

Situated along the wall on platform 1 it is 139 metres long (456 feet) which is the length of 12 double decker buses and is able to accommodate around 230 people.

The bench was constructed by North Eastern Railway architect William Bell in 1883 as part of the station expansion to accommodate the increasing number of tourists to the resort. It is now protected under a Grade II listing.

We are holding an event to celebrate this important piece of railway history on Tuesday 30th September.
Students from Scarborough sixth form will join us at 11am on platform 1 to see how many people we can fit on the bench side by side. Some will be dressed in period costumes from the last 200 years and the press will be invited to photograph the occasion.
